The Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC), in partnership with LISC, conducted a “listening campaign” in 2009 to understand Chinatown’s past, present, and future and to set goals about where to go from here. Following a series of visioning workshops with grassroots Chinatown representatives, CCDC interviewed nearly 100 neighborhood stakeholders in 2009, including residents, civic leaders, property owners, merchants and local associations.
Several priorities emerged from the interviews, including:
• Promote Chinatown as a Cultural Center
• Support Community Businesses
• Preserve and Expand Affordable Housing for Seniors and Immigrant Families
• Make Streets Less Congested and More Pleasant to Walk
• Encourage Working Partnerships between Neighborhood Stakeholders
• Ensure Existing Single Room Occupancy Units are Safe
• Increase Cleanliness and Safety Awareness
• Guide Community People to Local Jobs
• Demand Language Access and Cultural Competency
• Create Innovative Open Space and Recreation Opportunities
The draft report on the Chinatown Listening Campaign reflects the voices of community stakeholders and will serve as a basis for refining goals and working together to create change.
